In a post-apocalyptic society, some children are born with various forms of psychic powers that develop during adolescence--a defect that warrants death when detected by their elders. When these powers appear in Elspeth Gordie, she flees her home and heads to the remote mountain outpost of Obernewtyn, where it is rumored that her kind can find sanctuary.
